Osteopathic Treatment for Migraines and Headaches

Osteopathic Treatment for Migraines and Headaches

Osteopathic Treatment for Migraines and Headaches

Migraines and headaches can be debilitating, causing immense pain and discomfort for those who suffer from them. Fortunately, there are various treatment options available to address these conditions. Osteopathic treatment, in particular, offers a holistic approach that focuses on treating the root cause of migraines and headaches rather than just alleviating the symptoms. In this article, I explore a few key osteopathic treatment options for migraines and headaches: craniosacral therapy, prescribed medications, manipulative therapy, myofascial release, and soft tissue massage.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a therapeutic approach that utilizes gentle hand pressure to manipulate the bones, particularly in the head, in order to promote healing and balance in the body. This therapy was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger, who conducted extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983.

During a session, the practitioner uses light touch to evaluate and release any restrictions or imbalances in the craniosacral rhythm. This rhythm, which can be felt as a subtle pulsation, reflects the overall health and well-being of a person. The benefits of Craniosacral therapy are numerous. By restoring balance to the craniosacral system, Craniosacral therapy can alleviate a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain and stress to migraines, neurological disorders, and increased overall well-being.

Prescribe Medications

Certified Osteopathic Doctors are able to administer prescribed medications for migraines to help provide relief to patients. First-line medications have been established as effective based on clinical evidence. These medications can help prevent migraines or reduce their frequency and severity. In addition to this, newer medicines have also been approved for the treatment of migraines. Osteopathic Doctors may consider prescribing these newer medications based on the individual needs and response of each patient.

Osteopathic Doctors, with their comprehensive understanding of the musculoskeletal system and holistic approach to healthcare, are well-equipped to assess the individual needs of migraine sufferers and prescribe appropriate medications. By taking into account the patient’s medical history, lifestyle factors, and potential drug interactions, Osteopathic Doctors ensure a personalized and safe treatment plan. With the guidance and expertise, individuals can find relief from migraines and headaches to improve their overall quality of life.

Manipulative Therapy

Manipulative therapy is a cornerstone of osteopathic treatment for migraines and headaches. It involves the skilled manipulation of joints, muscles, and tissues to restore balance and alleviate pain. The primary objective of manipulative therapy is to improve the function of the musculoskeletal system, which can contribute to migraines and headaches.

During manipulative therapy, an osteopathic physician (DO) will use various techniques such as spinal manipulation, joint mobilization, and muscle stretching to address any musculoskeletal imbalances. By restoring proper alignment and movement, tension and stress on the surrounding tissues are reduced, thus relieving migraines and headaches.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is another effective osteopathic treatment option for migraines and headaches. It focuses on releasing tension and restrictions in the fascia, a connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, and organs. When the fascia becomes tight or restricted, it can contribute to migraines and headaches.

During a myofascial release session, the osteopathic physician will use gentle and sustained pressure on specific areas of the body to release tension and restore proper fascial mobility. This technique helps to improve circulation, reduce pain, and promote overall relaxation. By addressing fascial restrictions, myofascial release can provide significant relief for individuals suffering from migraines and headaches.

Soft Tissue Massage

Soft tissue massage is a widely recognized and utilized osteopathic treatment option for migraines and headaches. It involves manual manipulation of the soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The aim of soft tissue massage is to reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow, and promote relaxation.

During a soft tissue massage session, the osteopathic physician will use various techniques such as kneading, stroking, and compressions to target specific areas of tension and discomfort. This helps to relax the areas of discomfort.

Tendinopathies Demystified

Tendinopathies Demystified

Unraveling the Causes Behind the Pain and Discovering Solutions

Tendinopathies, commonly referred to as tendon injuries, can cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility in affected individuals. Tendon injuries, also known as tendinopathies, occur when there is acute irritation in the tendon that surpasses the body’s ability to repair itself. Fortunately, there are several effective treatment options available that can help alleviate symptoms and promote recovery.

As an osteopath, I believe tendinopathies are a complex condition requiring a comprehensive treatment approach. Tendinopathies refer to the degeneration or inflammation of a tendon, and they can cause significant pain and functional limitations.

Common Symptoms of Tendinopathies include…

1. Feeling a crackling or grating sensation when you move your joint
2. Muscle weakness and loss of strength
3. Red, warm skin in the painful area
4. General area pain
5. General area swelling
6. Stiffness and restricted mobility at the affected joint
7. Muscle weakness
8. The skin over the affected area may feel sensitive
9. Pain during activity
10. Tendon thickening
11. Tendon nodularity
12. Crepitus
13. Overuse or strain on a joint can inflame tendons and result in tendinitis
14. Tendinitis is inflammation of the thick fibrous cords that attach
15. Pain (a dull ache) in the shoulder and upper arm

I’ve further referenced an article below highlighting the different types of tendinopathies, their causes, and some potential treatment options.

It is important to note that I approach each case individually and tailor the treatment plan to the specific needs of the patient. While the article provides a good general overview, it is crucial for an osteopath to assess the patient’s overall health, lifestyle, and biomechanics to develop an effective treatment strategy. This may involve a combination of manual therapy techniques, exercises, and lifestyle modifications.

By taking a holistic approach and considering the individual factors contributing to tendinopathies. Treating tendinopathies requires a personalized approach that addresses the root causes and incorporates various treatment modalities, rather than relying solely on a one-size-fits-all.

Back Pain Conditions and Cures

Back Pain Conditions and Cures

Traditional Medicine Compared to Osteopathic Treatments

Back pain is a common ailment that affects people of all ages and can significantly impact daily activities.

Traditional medicine often prescribes pharmacological treatments, but guidelines support the use of non-pharmacological options such as spinal manipulation. Osteopathic Medicine uses a range of gentle techniques to manipulate the muscles, soft tissues, and joints in affected areas to increase the range of motion, reduce pain and improve overall function.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is particularly effective for lower back pain, and although its use is not widespread, it remains a viable alternative to traditional treatments.

OMT involves hands-on techniques that aim to correct or improve somatic dysfunction in the body, addressing the underlying causes of pain. Overall, Osteopathic Medicine offers a valuable approach to managing back pain that is worth considering as an alternative or complementary treatment.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

Back pain causes 5 million people to consult their doctor every year and will cause pain to one in 5 of us at some point in our lives.

As mentioned in an Essential Osteopathy article, in the majority of cases, the problem comes on slowly, starting as backache, and reduced movement, and can also include shooting pains in the legs. It can be caused by many different factors including arthritis, trauma, slipped discs, or sciatica – leg pain due to trapped nerves. More recently it has been linked to people having increasingly sedentary lives (especially as a lot of people now have their workstations set up poorly at home) rather than traditional industry-related injuries such as burns and cuts.

Increasingly doctors are left with limited options (such as medications and physiotherapy for which there is often a long waiting list with which to help patients) so the person is left trying different therapists and therapies for a cure.

Research seems to show that surgery is not a quick fix for back pain and is only necessary in less than 4% of cases. It indicates that prevention is indeed better than cure and that exercise and good posture are very important, particularly in conjunction with a therapy such as Osteopathy.

How Can Osteopathic Medicine Help Me?

How Can Osteopathic Medicine Help Me?

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) or Osteopathic Medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on the relationship between musculoskeletal health and the general health of the patient.

The goal of OMT is to reduce pain, improve function, and increase healthy movement. It is based on the principle that all bodily functions are interrelated and must be considered and treated together.

Osteopathic physicians are trained to use their hands to diagnose, assess, treat, and help prevent injury related to the musculoskeletal system in the whole body as a system.

Osteopathic treatment ranges from gentle and subtle cranial osteopathic techniques to more direct techniques that manually correct the bony structure and many techniques in between.  These techniques are used to correct muscle imbalances that can cause injury or interfere with normal joint and musculoskeletal motion.

Sometimes appointments include other things such as workplace ergonomics or teaching simple exercises for home usage to speed recovery from acute and chronic issues.
